The Legacy Trail

How great would it be to plan a cycling vacation that could take you across the entire state of Florida?  Imagine all that you could see along the way.  There are big dreams in place for exactly that to happen, starting with the Legacy Trail that currently travels through Sarasota and Manatee Counties.  Don't have a bike?  Problem solved!  There are several local bikes shops that can get you outfitted with a rental so you can enjoy the trail.

The Legacy Trail in Sarasota, Florida, is a treasured outdoor space, offering more than 18 miles of scenic paths for cyclists, runners, and walkers. There are many points of entry along the trail and we have several in my town of Nokomis.  I love this section of the trail as it passes over Dona Bay!

Originally part of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, the trail was thankfully transformed from a defunct railroad corridor into a recreational amenity in 2008.  Blending historical significance with natural beauty, the trail continues to grow in size and popularity.  Over the past 12 months, 660,000 outdoor enthusiasts have spent time on the trail.  Later this year in 2024, construction of overpasses across Bee Ridge Road and Clark Road will be underway.   And there are plans in the works to connect the Legacy Trail with the Florida Gulf Coast Trail linking Tampa to Naples, with an eye on connecting to an entire network of trails throughout the state of Florida!

For now, the Legacy Trail stretches from Venice to downtown Sarasota, passing through many diverse landscapes and points of interest along the way.  One of our favorites includes Oscar Scherer State Park, where you can explore additional trails, observe local wildlife, go kayaking and camping, and attend the very popular Halloween Haunted Trails event.  (Long lines each year, get your tickets early!).

Tips for Enjoying the Trail

If you’re planning to explore the Legacy Trail, here are a few tips to enhance your experience:

  • Start Early: Especially during the warmer months, starting your journey early in the day can help you avoid the heat and enjoy a more peaceful experience.
  • Bring Water: While there are rest stops along the trail, it’s essential to bring plenty of water, especially if you’re planning a longer trip.
  • Watch for Wildlife: Keep an eye out for local wildlife, but remember to observe from a distance and respect their habitats.
  • Use Sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, the Florida sun can be intense, so applying sunscreen is a good idea.

See you on the Trail!
